This week, we caught up with Natalie and asked her a few questions about herself and her week at Matrix.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Natalie Rose. I’m seventeen years old and I’m currently studying my second year of A Levels at college. I’m taking English Literature, Sociology, History and the Extended Project. I also have AS Levels in Religious Studies and Law.
Why are you interested in law?
While studying for my GCSEs, I began to develop an interest in law. I’d always been interested in English Literature, but I realised that there wasn’t exactly a direct career route from that. So, when researching other routes that I could consider, I stumbled across law and it immediately stood out for me. I decided to take it as an A Level to see if I would find it as enjoyable as I thought I would. I fell in love with the subject at A Level. Although we were only learning the technicalities of law and the very basics, I found it extremely interesting. I achieved full marks in my January exam. However, upon reflection of my grades and the work I would have to complete in A2, I decided not to keep on at it and instead to continue with my other three A Levels.
Which bits of law intrigue you the most?
I have always leant more towards the barrister side of law than the solicitor side. Having always enjoyed a good debate, the job of a barrister thoroughly appealed to me. As for specific aspects of law, I was immediately drawn to criminal law, as most people are at first. In particular, I was interested in white-collar crime and the law relating to that. During my Law AS, I went on a trip with my class to meet a small group of criminals and had the opportunity to talk to them. Most of my class were most interested in those that had been found guilty of murder or theft, but it was the one white-collar criminal there that intrigued me the most.
What has been the best part of your week at Matrix?
For me, the best part of the week was probably my time in the office. There was such a lovely, friendly atmosphere and everyone was very welcoming. I felt very much at home by the end of the week. I look forward to hopefully working in a similar environment in the future.
What do you want to do next?
I am currently in the process of applying for university. I’m looking to study English Literature with Creative Writing at either Reading, Surrey, Keele, Chester or Canterbury. I am considering then converting to a Law degree, and am considering it even more now after this week.
Lovely to meet you, Natalie. All the best for the future.
